Alcohol Policy Information System (APIS)NIAAA

  • The Alcohol Policy Information System (APIS) provides detailed information on a wide variety of alcohol-related policies in the United States at both State and Federal levels. Detailed state-by-state information is available for the 35 alcohol-related policies listed below. APIS also provides a variety of informational resources of interest to alcohol policy researchers and others involved with alcohol policy issues.

Alcohol Related Disease Impact (ARDI) (Interactive portal), CDC

  • According to the CDC, “excessive alcohol use was responsible for more than 140,000 deaths in the United States each year during 2015–2019, or more than 380 deaths per day… .ARDI provides estimates of alcohol-attributable deaths and years of potential life lost from 58 conditions by age, sex, and state….”  ARDI allows users to drill down to state level data.

College Risk Behavior Survey

  • The College Risk Behaviors Study is an annual survey administered during the spring semester to a random sample of full-time, undergraduate, University of Delaware and Wesley College Students.

Delaware Prescription Drug Action Committee

  • The Delaware Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP). The Delaware Prescription Monitoring Act (16 Del. C.§ 4798) authorizes the Office of Controlled Substances (OCS) in the Delaware Division of Professional Regulation to establish, maintain and monitor the PMP in order to reduce misuse of controlled substances in Delaware and to promote improved professional practice and patient care.
  • The PMP is a system that collects information on all controlled substance (schedules II-V) prescriptions. Using the PMP website, Delaware-licensed pharmacies and prescribers who dispense controlled substances report prescription data to the PMP daily. Prescribers and dispensers registered with the PMP can obtain immediate access to an online report of their current or prospective patient’s controlled substance prescription history. This PMP website is available 24/7 and is to be used for healthcare purposes only.

Delaware School Survey

  • The Delaware School Survey is an annual survey of 5th, 8th, and 11th grade public school students in Delaware.  The surveys are administered at the public schools in Delaware.
  • In order for the Center for Drug and Health Studies to release school data at the school level or district level, permission has to be sought from the District’s Superintendent or Principal. See attached link for data release form:  Delaware School Survey Data Release Form

  • The most recent reports from DSAMH about treatment admissions for substance use in regards to primary drug of treatment, demographics, caseload, etc.

Kaiser Family Foundation

  • Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit, private operating foundation focusing on the major health care issues (including substance use) facing the U.S., as well as the U.S. role in global health policy. They serve as a non-partisan source of facts, information, and analysis for policymakers, the media, the health care community, and the public. Their products provide in-depth information on key health policy issues including Medicaid, Medicare, health reform, global health, etc.

Medicare Part D Opioid Drug Mapping Tool

  • This website provides national, state, county, and zip-code level data of Medicare Part D opioid prescription claims between 2013-2018.
  • The mapping tool compares zip code, county and state level data of Medicare Part D claims to total opioid claims, as well as all other prescription claims.
  • Additional prescriber data, including the names and locations of prescribers participating in Medicare Part D, and their opioid prescribing rates, are available through this website.
  • Users are able to view, analyze and download data.

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR)

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention post a weekly series of scientific publications regarding health issues and related data. MMWR Recommendations and Reports are also accessible from this web page.

My Health Community

  • My Healthy Community provides community-level statistics and data on health issues.
  • This data source covers a wide scope of factors that influence health such as substance use disorder, treatment resources, and crime rates at the community level.

National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services, SAMHSA

  • N-SSATS is designed to collect information from all facilities in the United States, both public and private, that provide substance abuse treatment. N-SSATS includes some 13,000 facilities with about 1.1 million clients in treatment on the survey reference date.

  • National and state-level data on the use of tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs (including non-medical use of prescription drugs) and mental health in the United States

POLICYMAP

  • A comprehensive data mapping resource that includes “over 50,000 indicators” accessible through an online portal. Users can explore various substance use data in a given geographic region.

SAMHSA Data and Dissemination

  • The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Data searchable webpage that provides comprehensive access to the catalog of SAMHSA datasets, reports, and other data products

SAPPET, Substance Abuse Prevention Planning and Epidemiology Tool

  • SAPPET is an interactive, web-based data and planning tool offering access to key substance abuse and behavioral health data sources, indicator estimates, and interactive graphs and tables.
  • Data sources available through SAPPET include:  BRFSS, FARS, NCANDS, NSDUH, PRAMS, Alcohol and Tobacco Sales, TEDS, UCR, YRBS, and Mortality data.  Most data are only available at the state level. 
  • Users are able to view, analyze, and download data.  The site also offers additional resources and tools to support prevention planning and evaluation.

SUDORS Dashboard, State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System, CDC 

  • This CDC visualization dashboard includes Delaware data on fatal overdoses.

Treatment Episode Dataset, SAMHSA

  • TEDS provides information on the demographic and substance abuse characteristics of the 1.8 million annual admissions to treatment for abuse of alcohol and drugs in facilities that report to individual State administrative data systems. TEDS is an admission-based system, and TEDS admissions do not represent individuals. Thus, for example, an individual admitted to treatment twice within a calendar year would be counted as two admissions.
  • TEDS does not include all admissions to substance abuse treatment. It includes admissions to facilities that are licensed or certified by the State substance abuse agency to provide substance abuse treatment (or are administratively tracked for other reasons). In general, facilities reporting TEDS data are those that receive State alcohol and/or drug agency funds (including Federal Block Grant funds) for the provision of alcohol and/or drug treatment services.

WISQARS, CDC

  • CDC’s WISQARS™ (Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System) is an interactive, online database that provides fatal and nonfatal injury, violent death, and cost of injury data from a variety of trusted sources. Researchers, the media, public health professionals, and the public can use WISQARS™ data to learn more about the public health and economic burden associated with unintentional and violence-related injury in the United States.

Youth Risk Behavior Survey, CDC

  • The Delaware Division of Public Health participates in the CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) for high school students in odd numbered years. Through various sponsors (Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families Division of Prevention and Behavioral Health Services in 2019; Nemours Children’s Health System from 2006-2017), Delaware youth have also participated in the middle school administration of the YRBS.

  • Level: National, State* Both state and national level high school data can be explored using the CDC Interactive Data Analysis Tool online. State level middle school data and aggregated middle school data from participating locations throughout the country are also available using the data tool. State level data is accessible when the state sample characteristics meet the criteria established by the CDC, which is also the criteria for Delaware data to be included in aggregated data sets. Youth Tobacco Survey (National), CDC

  • The Delaware Division of Public Health participates in the Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) in even numbered years. The survey is administered to middle and high school students. National YTS data is accessible from the CDC website.
